Curating a Creative Life — Sunday Sabbath

There are days when motivation is perhaps the most elusive part pursuing a creative life. Yesterday was one of those days. Yesterday was the kind of day where I had to push myself to do even the smallest tasks. Because what I wanted to do was sit on my couch and stare at my phone, scrolling mindlessly or playing a meaningless game.

I don’t know if you’ve had days like that or not, but they are days that remind me how much I need to unplug and recharge. Eventually I managed to make myself do the burpees I needed to do (as I’ve done every day this month as part of the NFL Crucial Catch challenge), and that helped energize me to get a few other things done.

But the day definitely had a different feel to it. And the missing component was not making time to rest in the true sense, in the Biblical sense of ceasing from work. It is in stopping work and unplugging from social media and my phone in particular that I am able to refill the well from which I draw my creative energy.

Without these critical breaks, my ability to show up, for myself as well as for others, diminishes greatly. This is why I included the idea of Sunday Sabbath in this Curating a Creative Life series.
