Find 100 things you’re thankful by starting with five

Have you ever been challenged to write down 100 things for which you are grateful? I’ve seen this idea in at least two personal development style books and have started lists that completely fizzled after only 13 or 14 items. It’s like much of my writing ideas, when I start writing, the idea becomes elusive. So it was with 100 things for which I am grateful. As soon as I picked up my pen anything I’ve ever been thankful for went right out of my mind.

Now instead of trying to capture 100 things all at once, I do it five items at a time. Five is an easier amount, but that’s not the reason I focus on doing only five at a time. I do it this way because it provides me an opportunity to really consider how much I appreciate each thing I write down.

For example, when I write down each of my girls’ names, I pause and think about what it is about each of them that I cherish — their laugh, the way they sing a particular song, the way my youngest loves to be my sous chef in the kitchen or the way my oldest will hug me when she senses I’m beginning to stress over something not worth stressing about.

When I write down I’m grateful for the faith God has given me, I stop and consider why I’m grateful for my faith. I recall all the ways God has shown up for me at different…
