One Small Step

“Lemmings, all of them,” Finn said again, tapping out a piano tune on his beer mug. Finn, whose full name was Finnick William Sibrel (yes, son of that Sibrel), took a long swig of his beer and then continued, “It’s all just so obvious.”

“Seriously, this again?” Xander replied, his eyes on the television at the end of the bar. Most of the time Xander enjoyed hanging out with his oldest friend, but when Finn had a couple of beers and got started on his conspiracy theories, it quickly became a drag to listen to all the same things he’d heard at least a thousand times.

“Look, I’ve done the research on this,” said Finn.

“Yeah, I know.”

“Can you believe it’s been fifty years,” a guy in a yellow striped polo shirt half way down the bar said, his eyes, like Xander’s on the television.

Finn looked at the guy, his disbelief and disdain etched clearly on his face. “You see?”

“I do,” said Xander and he nodded at the screen. “Right there, the familiar news footage from that incredible moment. Can you even imagine what that must have been like?”

On the screen, black and white footage of the Apollo 11 lunar landing played as a deeply resonating voice…
