Everybody remembers their first concert, right?

My first concert experience came together through a series of kismet-like events (though my dad probably considered them a series of unfortunate events). At the time I was a high school freshman and my all time favorite band at the time was Styx. When I learned they were coming to play at the Providence Civic Center, I was determined to be in that audience. My parents, on the other hand, were not nearly as excited by this prospect as I was.

I’d like to say that I managed to wear them down and they agreed to let me and my best friend go see the band, but then this wouldn’t be a Saturday story, would it?

I did, however, manage to strike a deal with them. Even at the time, the likelihood I’d get to the concert seemed nearly impossible. Why? Because the deal involved these terms: if my best friend and I could win tickets from one of the local radio stations giving them away, we could go to the concert. Oh, but we had to win enough tickets for me, my best friend, and both of our dads.
